Position Summary Information

Purpose of this Position

Carleton College’s Office of College Communications is seeking a full-time Senior Graphic Designer to join its creative team. The department develops communications strategies and produces multimedia marketing materials for student recruitment, special events, fund raising, alumni and institutional relations, and other campus clients. As an integral member of our team, the senior graphic designer will work on projects from concept through delivery to ensure that they reflect Carleton’s established brand.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Ability to lead design strategy and trend discussions.
  • Ability to provide solutions to meet our clients’ goals and objectives while keeping within budget.
  • Ability to articulate design concepts.
  • Ability to influence client thinking and project direction.
  • Ability to collaborate with campus clients, communications staff members, and the broader Carleton community.
  • Ability to off-set the demands of the Creative Director when it comes to established project management and design direction.

Project Management:

  • Develop creative briefs for larger-scale projects.
  • Develop concepts, graphics, and layouts to present to clients.
  • Instruct clients on production schedules and deadlines.
  • Review final layouts closely and suggest improvements, as required.
  • Prepare spec sheets and files for external printers.
  • Work closely with external printers to ensure that deadlines and budgets are met and materials are printed to the highest quality.
  • Identify, hire, and supervise freelance photographers and illustrators, as needed.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Advanced knowledge of design/production software, including the Adobe Creative Suite.

Supervision:

  • This position will supervise one full-time graphic designer and hire and supervise up to three student designers per academic term. This position reports to the Director of Creative Services.

Environment:

  • On site in Northfield, Minnesota; occasional work from home
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, art, or related field, plus five to ten years professional experience in graphic design.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in college or university setting. Preference will be shown to candidates who possess one or more of the following: illustration, photography, infographics, motion graphics, and social media experience
