Position Summary Information

Purpose of this Position

The Director of the Language Center will develop and extend the College’s capabilities for teaching and learning with digital media and educational technologies to enhance language learning and teaching and encourages innovative use of learning and teaching technologies.

The Language Center is a technology-rich learning space for students and faculty of languages at the College. The Director provides administrative oversight and management of the Language Center to ensure smooth and effective functioning of the Center with exceptional service to the community.

This is an exempt 11-month, 0.75 FTE (33 hours per week) position, and reports to the Associate Dean of the College.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities

Provides collaborative leadership in the development and implementation of effective uses of technology and digital media in the teaching of languages and related curriculum.

  • Stays informed about innovations and trends in technology-enhanced language pedagogies; promotes and disseminates to the faculty information about creative and effective uses of learning and teaching technologies in the languages.
  • Tests, evaluates, and recommends new technologies for language teaching. Evaluates equipment and other resources to support curricular objectives.
  • Trains faculty on uses of new technology through events and other appropriate mechanisms. Plans demonstrations or workshops as needed to demonstrate use of equipment. Assists and advises faculty in the development of effective technology-based teaching strategies and instructional design.
  • Maintains a technology environment that supports the array of instructional needs of the language departments.

Directs the operations of the Language Center.

  • With community input, develops, modifies and implements programs and services for the Language Center. Sets policies and procedures for student and faculty use of the Center.
  • Administers operating budgets for the Language Center.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises student workers and administrative assistant to support the activities of the Language Center.
  • Coordinates with ITS to ensure effective operation of Language Center technology to meet faculty and student needs.
  • Coordinates with College librarians regarding the foreign language film collection and as necessary oversees management of those resources to support language courses.

Oversees co-curricular uses of the Language Center facilities in support of the mission of the Language Departments.

Assists departments in placement assessment activities, in particular those employing technology.

Provides initial and on-going orientation for language associates.

Depending on qualifications, occasional teaching [up to one course per year] may be added to the position.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in one of the languages offered at Carleton, applied linguistics, or language acquisition.
  • Experience in teaching foreign language and use of current technology in language instruction.
  • Familiarity with technology-enhanced pedagogies for language instruction and with the technologies that support these pedagogies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to work effectively with multiple language departments with different needs, and to work with faculty to find the best solutions to pedagogical and technology needs.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Five years of relevant experience
