Position Summary Information

Purpose of this Position

The Science Education Associate pursues funding opportunities, conducts and collaborates on projects fostering improved STEM learning, and disseminates the results to the education community.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities

The Science Education Associate works closely with SERC staff and other collaborators to support effective science teaching and learning. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing ideas for and authoring grant proposals.
  • Designing, conducting, collaborating on, and/or consulting with projects that support effective practices in science education and institutional change.
  • Convening or supporting professional development events, overseeing all aspects of SERC’s contribution to the events and resulting websites.
  • Develop with external collaborators websites providing resources in support of improved STEM teaching and learning.
  • Working with project evaluators and research teams studying program processes and outcomes.
  • Authoring or co-authoring journal articles and conference presentations on project results.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned, may include literature research and quantitative data analysis.
  • Work will require domestic travel to workshops and professional meetings.

Supervision Received and Exercised:

The Science Education Associate will work as a self-directed member of the SERC webteam with leadership from SERC assistant director, technical director, and project PIs. Overall priorities and assignments are developed by the SERC director.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in geoscience or related field (for example, environmental studies, environmental economics, ecology, environmental chemistry or geography) OR PhD in education or related field with significant experience in geoscience or related field.
  • Ability to design, conduct, and manage professional development projects.
  • Strong interest in higher education.
  • Strong writing and communication skills including:
    • The ability to write grant proposals for future research projects.
    • The ability to write journal articles summarizing research findings.
    • The ability to create well designed web pages that quickly convey the scope of content and its importance while drawing user into more complex information deeper in the site; to effectively edit submissions from a variety of sources to create cohesive products; and to deliver professional presentations.
  • Ability to confidently interact with university faculty, scientists and other professionals while managing projects, guiding the work of individuals and leading workshop groups.
  • Interest in and experience with project scale collaboration.
  • Comfort working with groups of workshop participants both during one-on-one virtual interactions and in large group face-to-face settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete project on schedule and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently on loosely defined tasks as well as in close cooperation with a tight-knit team.
  • Willingness to make several trips per year to support workshops, make presentations, and conduct evaluation activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and develop web content.
  • Knowledge of higher education and its culture.
  • Knowledge of effective practices and challenges in higher education.
  • Affinity for computer work, fluency with common commercial software products, and ability to quickly learn new computer operations, such as SERC’s content management system.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of or experience with education research or disciplinary educator research.
